The Benefits of Sauna
An Overview of what Sauna usage is and the benefits it can bring you.

Overview of Sauna Practice

"Sauna," originating in Finland, usually describes a room constructed with unpainted spruce or pine panels, featuring wooden benches typically made from materials like aspen, spruce, or obeche. Most of the research on sauna bathing has been carried out in Finland or the Finnish-style traditions. It's important to note that saunas can come in various styles, differing in terms of their heat source, humidity, and how long they are used for.

Heat Source

Most modern saunas are heated by conventional electric heaters or infrared heaters. Conventional heaters warm the air to a high temperature, ranging from 70°C to 100°C (158°F to 212°F), optimally at 80°C to 90°C (176°F to 194°F) at the level of the user's face.

Humidity

Saunas can be either dry or wet. In a dry sauna, the relative humidity is in the lower 10-20%. A common practice in Finland, called löyly, is to throw water on the heater rocks to increase the humidity slightly. The term “wet sauna” is a misnomer, referring to a steam sauna, where the humidity is extremely high, usually upwards of 50%, which keeps sweat from evaporating. A wet sauna may feel hotter than a dry sauna and is harder on the cardiovascular system, due to the reduced evaporative cooling.

Duration and Temperature

Finnish-style sauna involves short sessions of 5 to 20 minutes in a hot sauna, followed by cooling down. Some methods, like rolling in snow or cold water, can be tough on the heart, but for most healthy people, saunas are safe. Studies found that saunas at 78.9°C (174°F) for at least 20 minutes reduced cardiovascular deaths and overall mortality. Longer sessions (19 minutes or more) were even better than shorter ones (11 to 18 minutes).

Benefits of Sauna

Detoxification and Cleansing

One of the primary benefits of saunas is detoxification. When you enter a sauna and start to sweat, your body releases toxins through your skin. This natural cleansing process helps eliminate heavy metals, pollutants, and other harmful substances from your body, leaving you feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Cardiovascular Health

Regular sauna use has been linked to improved cardiovascular health. Sitting in a sauna increases your heart rate and promotes blood circulation. This gentle cardiovascular workout can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve overall heart function.

Stress Reduction

The relaxing environment of a sauna can have a profound impact on your mental well-being. Stress levels tend to decrease as you unwind in the soothing heat, and this stress reduction can have long-lasting positive effects on your mood and mental clarity.

Improved Sleep

For those struggling with sleep issues, saunas may offer relief. The rise in body temperature during sauna use followed by a cooling-off period can mimic the body's natural sleep cycle, helping you achieve a more restful night's sleep.

Muscle Recovery and Pain Relief

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts often turn to saunas for muscle recovery and pain relief. The heat from the sauna can help relax muscles, reduce inflammation, and alleviate soreness after intense physical activity.

Rhonda Patrick's Insights

Renowned researcher Rhonda Patrick has extensively studied the health benefits of saunas. Her work highlights how saunas can activate heat shock proteins, which play a crucial role in protecting cells from stress and improving overall cellular health.

Conclusion

Incorporating regular sauna sessions into your wellness routine can provide a wide range of benefits, from detoxification and improved cardiovascular health to stress reduction and enhanced sleep. With researchers like Rhonda Patrick and Andrew Huberman shedding light on the science behind saunas, it's clear that this ancient practice has a lot to offer in terms of modern health and well-being.

So why not consider incorporating sauna sessions into your lifestyle? Your body and mind may thank you for it in the long run.
